Museum Würth opens exhibition: Anthony Caro and Eduardo Chillida
Anthony Caro (1924-2013) and Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) are among the most eminent sculptors of the 20th century and would both have turned 100 in 2024. From 18 December 2023, Museum Würth in Künzelsau is taking this as an opportunity to use its own collection as the basis for a dialogue between the two artists in the new exhibition “Sculptors & Spaces: Anthony Caro and Eduardo Chillida” and to bring their respective oeuvres to life.
With their sculptures, which reflect their own respective individual artistic styles, Caro and Chillida transcended existing boundaries. Both artists are hailed as representatives of sculptural abstraction and significantly contributed to the development of modern sculpture. With their often lavishly expansive sculptures, they left their mark on many places. Yet both artists also excelled in small formats and in the diversity of materials they used, ranging from fireclay, granite and stoneware to steel, brass, iron to concrete, wood and alabaster. The exhibition highlights both the differences and similarities between the two sculptors, who constantly explored the realms of possibility regarding form, material and subject matter in sculpture.
In addition to works from the Würth Collection, the exhibition presents a number of selected works on loan in order to demonstrate the entire spectrum of development in these two sculptors’ works over a period of several decades. Around 70 selected sculptures and mural works are on display.
Further sculptures by the two artists are displayed along the sculpture trail around Carmen Würth Forum in Künzelsau. The Würth Collection now comprises around 20,000 works of international art.
